All of their finished products are made in sunny Southern California, except for their lip balm which is made in New Mexico.

Are Giovanni products safe for chemically and/or color treated hair?
All Giovanni pH balanced shampoos and conditioners will gently cleanse and condition without drying or stripping most natural and color treated hair. They use mild gentle surfactants (foaming agents) and their products contain no sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, or other harsh chemicals found in many brands.

Are Giovanni products hypoallergenic?
Hypoallergenic is a term coined by advertisers (based on the Greek prefix hypo meaning "below normal" or "slightly") and first used in a cosmetics campaign in 1953. Any consumer could at any time, find themselves allergic to any ingredient. Giovanni uses ingredients that are mild and plant based so allergic reactions are rare. However, it is recommended when using any new product to do a patch test on your skin.

Fragrances can refer to essential oils, synthetic fragrance or natural fragrance and each can be present by itself or in combination with each other in a product formula. With regard to fragrance the majority of Giovanni products contain only natural fragrance and essential oils. When synthetic fragrance is used in certain products it is necessary to ensure product stability.

How can I tell if my product is expired?
They print a batch code on every product that determines the production date. The 5 digit numerical code on the bottom of their packaging and on the shipping carton represents the Julian Date. With regards to the Julian Date, the first 2 numbers represent the year products were manufactured, The last 3 digits represent the day of the year the product was manufactured.

Example:
Batch Code 06001
06 = the year 2006
001 = the first day of the year, January 1

Therefore, if the product has a batch code of 06001, it was manufactured the 1st day of 2006, or January 1, 2006.

The products that contain alcohol have a shelf life of 7 years, ie: LA Hold Hair Spray and More Body Hair Thickener. The products that contain very little water have a shelf life of 4-4 1/2 years, ie: Frizz Be Gone, Shine of the Times, Straight Fast. All other Giovanni products have a shelf life of 3-3 1/2 years.
