The JASON Story
1959.
While the big companies mixed new chemicals to create:
- Perfumed skin creams that promised miracle results
- Petroleum hair gunk for that swell greaser look
- Shellacking hairspray for helmeted ladies' hairdos
A group of independent thinkers drew upon the pioneering spirit that was so much a part of their California heritage and set out on a road of rediscovery. Theirs was a path back to simple, wholesome ingredients proven safer and proven to work together in naturally effective ways.
And so the JASON (which means "healer" in Greek) brand was born.
Wholesome ingredients were rounded up, like Apricot Oil and Wheat Protein for an aromatic shampoo that cleans gently. Also included were Aloe Vera and Vitamin E for a hydrating body lotion that soothes and smoothes the skin. Then there was Peppermint Oil and Bamboo powders for a whitening toothpaste that freshens and brightens your smile.
The JASON team meticulously created body loving products - at first just for their own family and friends - staying true to the JASON Code of Honor:
- Select safe, gentle and effective ingredients
- Rigorougly test every formula to ensure safety and efficacy
- Never test on animals
- Constantly innovate and improve
As one generation has given way to the next, JASON products have remained on the path forged by the brand's founders, committed to discovering even more ways to offer personal care solutions safer for them, their families and the planet.
Safety
More than Just a List of Ingredients to Avoid
The founders of the JASON brand set out to create safe, wholesome products for the whole family. Today, they stay true to that mission and live by a simple Code of Honor:
- Select safe, gentle and effective ingredients
- Rigorougly test every formula to ensure safety and efficacy
- Never test on animals
- Constantly innovate and improve
In 1959, when the JASON brand was founded, being safe and wholesome meant simply avoiding certain chemicals. While the list of synthetics and chemicals the JASON brand chooses not to use in formulations is ever expanding, the JASON brand also sets the industry standard in safety testing.
Can a Natural Ingredient be Harmful
They began by making a pact to select only the purest, gentlest ingredients, and put them through a series of rigorous testing procedures that would reflect their high standards. Over the years these tests have grown more rigorous. Just because an ingredient is plant-based doesn't mean it should go into a personal care product. Hemlock is a great example of a natural ingredient to avoid! Also, ingredients that are innocuous individually can produce toxins when combined in formulations. Finally, some natural ingredients can be irritating if too much is used. The safety testing that the JASON brand insists upon accounts for all of these possibilities and has grown increasingly more rigorous over the years. It takes their dedicated team of formulators an additional three or four months of testing after a formula is "approved" to ensure its safety. Only after a JASON formula passes their stringent safety tests is it actually approved for production.
Formula Stability Testing
To ensure their products will retain their original integrity and quality over extended time periods, they test formula samples at a variety of extreme temperatures. Extra hot and extra cold temperatures as well as freeze/thaw tests aggressively age the formulas and help simulate what might happen to a product during its life cycle - from manufacturing, to store shelf and finally into the homes of their loyal users. A personal care product might well be stored in a steamy shower for months at a time, so they need to be sure that their formulas will stand up to these kinds of conditions. After 12 weeks of extreme temperature testing, they evaluate the samples. If changes are minimal within the acceptable range, they can feel confident the product will retain its original quality on store shelves, and then on consumer shelves at home as well.
Preservative Effectiveness Testing
Because of the manner in which personal care products are used and stored, certain preservatives are required to maintain a formula's safety and integrity. Unlike a perishable item, they expect that a personal care product should continue to work and be safe over long periods of time, even when the cap is removed for use. Over the course a product's lifecycle, it's possible that some common household contaminant might be introduced to an open container. To ensure that even when that happens, their formulas will still be safe, they test their preservative efficacy. They do this by taking a small amount of formula and introducing common, household microorganisms in a controlled environment. They monitor these tests to prove that, even over time, the formulas have the ability to suppress microorganism growth and remain stable.
Skin Irritation Testing
Every formula is tested on human skin to make sure there is minimum potential for skin irritations or allergic reactions. These tests are essential to ensure safety. However, they only test on human volunteers. They will never conduct these, or any other tests, on animals.
Package/Product Compatibility Testing
To make certain their formulas are compatible with their packaging, they conduct extreme temperature tests with formulas in their final packages. They do this to make sure that the ingredients in the formulas don't react negatively with the packaging materials. If the formula in its packaging passes these rigorous tests, they can feel confident about sending it out to stores.
Over-the-Counter Drug Tests
Whenever they create a product (such as sun protection, anti-cavity or dandruff relief) that makes what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls an over-the-counter drug claim, they send the formulation to an independent laboratory. The lab tests the formula to ensure it meets the FDA's required level of active ingredient. Any formulation that doesn't have the correct level of the specific active ingredient will not be allowed to make the specified claim and will not be allowed to ship to stores.
Research and Development
Because new information is always becoming available, they constantly evaluate the latest ingredient research. When enough evidence calls into question the safety of a certain ingredient, they do not hesitate to remove it from JASON formulations. Safety is a core value of the JASON brand. So they are proud to set the highest standard in safety testing. With their rigorous testing, they can be sure that their products are as safe and wholesome as their consumers deserve them to be.
One Family. 3 Generations of JASON Products
Allison: a college student and vegetarian.
Robin, Allison's mom: an ecology director with a master's degree in environmental management.
Lucille, Robin's mom: a retired librarian.
How did these 3 generations of women discover JASON?
Was it their shared stance against products that test on animals? Were they searching for safer products that are environmentally sound? "Well, yes. All of that is true. But there's also the itchy head thing," Robin confessed. In fact, these women all wanted relief from a shared family problem... very sensitive skin, particularly on the scalp.
So back in 2008, on a visit to Mrs. Green's Natural Market in Scarsdale, New York, Robin searched the aisles for a shampoo that would be soothing for her daughter, Allison and herself. "For some reason I was drawn to the pictures of the herbs on the JASON bottle," Robin explained.
Scanning down the shelf, she noticed the Fragrance Free Shampoo and turned it over, "We always read the back of the bottles!" Robin was pleased to see chamomile, an herb she knew to be both soothing and safe, plus Sage Leaf Extract. "I didn't see any ingredients or chemicals that I knew would irritate my skin." She decided to give it a try. Within a few days she was hooked. "It's gentle and soothing and keeps my hair soft and shiny."
On a subsequent visit to Mrs. Green's Natural Market, Robin picked up the JASON Lavender Shampoo. She and Allison both love the fresh, clean smell of the lavender. They say the combination of Sweet Almond Oil and Wheat Protein adds natural volume to their hair. A few weeks later, Robin's mother Lucile came for an overnight visit. Lucile found the JASON Lavender Shampoo in the shower and decided to give it a try. Just like her daughter and grand-daughter, Lucile agreed her hair felt softer and smoother.
Robin laughs, "Now we're a three-generation JASON family and there's no more irritated scalps!" All three women adore the brand's pleasant scents, are pleased with the results and have come to depend on the brand's promises of safety and integrity.
