What’s the difference between EO and Everyone products?
Everyone products are quality, natural body care made for every body and priced for every budget. They come in larger sizes and many have versatile uses, like the 3-in-1 lotions and soaps. Everyone products are perfect for everyone in the family. They are non-GMO plant-based formulas made with ingredients responsibly sourced from around the world, just like EO, but the formulations are simpler. The formulations are more complex than Everyone and the signature blends reflect 20 years of experience working with essential oils and botanical actives. The EO brand allows them to use rare and exotic fragrances and ingredients. Are EO's essential oils safe to ingest?
EO loves essential oils. They want you to love them too. Lately, a lot of misinformation has been making its way into the mainstream regarding essential oils and how to use them. They are always concerned about their customers receiving misleading advice. EO’s here to clear the air and share how to use essential oils safely.

Their experience with these powerful essences goes back over twenty years. One thing they have always known, and that they’d like to emphasize, is that essential oils are not meant to be ingested in the concentrations you see available for purchase in stores and online. It’s true that essential oils are sometimes used to flavor food, toothpastes, and breath sprays, however, these mixtures have been blended by experts and are heavily diluted in amounts that make them safe for you to ingest.

Essential oils are super concentrated. To give you an idea, it takes one ton (that’s 2,000 pounds) of rose petals to make 10 ounces of rose oil. That works out to about 50 roses to make one single drop of oil. When you think about essential oils in this way, it becomes pretty clear that adding 50 or 100 roses to a glass of water is not a great idea.

Even though they are organic and derived from plants, they are meant to be enjoyed through your breath and on your skin. Diluting essential oils and water in an ultrasonic diffuser, for example, vaporizes the combination in safe amounts to breathe in. Adding just a few drops to a lotion, soap, or body oil disperses the oils and makes them safe to apply to skin.

A note about their Breath Spray
Their Organic Breath Spray contains Peppermint and Clove oils as well as Allspice and Menthol extracts. These are all very strong oils that can be overwhelming when used in any way, let alone when ingested. However, the concentration of oils and extracts in the Breath Spray is so minimal (under 1%), that it is perfectly safe to use in your mouth. The finished product is diluted in water and organic alcohol, and delivered through a spray mechanism that delivers 0.1ml of formula per spray. So, that’s like taking one single drop of essential oil, chopping it up into 100 pieces, and adding one of those pieces to water and alcohol. That’s all you need. Even at this minuscule amount, diluted in other materials, your mouth is brightened and refreshed. That just speaks to the incredible power of essential oils.

Are their products gluten free?
Yes, all EO and Everyone products are certified gluten free.

Are their products vegan?
Almost all of EO's products are vegan. The ones that are not vegan are easy to identify by the ingredient listed in the name of the product (for example, Chamomile and Honey shampoo). Below is a list of products that are NOT vegan:

All other EO and Everyone products are completely vegan and none of their products are ever tested on animals. All testing, research, development and manufacturing is done in a humans-only lab at their facility in Marin County, CA. EO Products, creator of EO and Everyone brands, is a certified green business, a certified B-Corporation, and the first certified non-GMO body care company. EO and Everyone products are also certified gluten free. Additionally, they are completely biodegradable and pH balanced. They have been manufacturing premium luxury body care products for 20 years using only the finest natural ingredients. While not all of the products are certified organic, they do opt for organic and wild-crafted ingredients whenever possible, and they are a certified organic manufacturer.

I’m concerned about some of the ingredients they use in their products. How do I know they are safe?

That philosophy is at the core of every aspect of their business, from developing formulas to sourcing ingredients to manufacturing and operations. For the past 20 years they have been creating body care products using the cleanest ingredients available that are also safe and effective. EO manufactures their own products so they can ensure that ingredients and sub-ingredients are sourced from like-minded responsible suppliers who also follow sustainable practices. While it’s sometimes necessary to include ingredients to keep a product safe from spoilage or contamination, their scientists draw on years of research and testing to find ingredients that will leave the least negative impact on the environment and consumers. Why do they use phyoxyethanol in their products?
Many customers are concerned about phenoxyethanol because there’s quite a bit of online controversy about its safety. You’ll find it being mentioned as everything from a developmental and reproductive toxicant to being linked to cancer. Fundamentally, it’s poorly interpreted science. Effective preservatives are vital for ensuring safety. Most personal care products are made with a lot of water and a variety of nutrients, which makes an incredibly hospitable breeding ground for microorganisms. Consider all of the natural oils and botanicals in EO and Everyone products. Why they use it: "We use phenoxyethanol in a very low concentration as a preservative in our products because the most accessible alternatives for these types of formulas include parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Both are classes of chemicals with demonstrable evidence of potential health risks, whereas phenoxyethanol is very safe at low levels. It’s been tested on the skin and eyes and it is non-irritating and non-sensitizing at levels of 2.2% or lower while being effective at only 1% concentrations." The European Union and Japan both approve its use up to that 1% level and their formulas fall well below the recommendation at 0.5% or less (depending on the specific product). Most of the studies that have found significant negative health impacts are based on full-strength or high-dose exposures. In real life usage, exposures are quite small. That’s why it’s approved at levels up to 1%. It’s all about the final formulation. Even better, phenoxyethanol doesn’t react with other ingredients, air, or light. This kind of stability makes it an especially effective preservative.

Why is benzyl alcohol listed as an ingredient in Everyone Face Wipes when the package says Alcohol Free?
They use Benzyl alcohol as a preservative at very low levels (less than 0.5%). Although this compound has a molecular group similar to alcohols (hence the name) it does not have physical and chemical properties of conventional alcohols, such as methanol and ethanol, and will not irritate the skin. Benzyl Alcohol is, in fact, found naturally in many foods such as Apricots, Snap Beans, Cocoa, Cranberries, Mushrooms and Honey. Benzyl Alcohol is also found in the essential oil of many plants, including Jasmine, Hyacinth and Ylang-Ylang.

Why do they use dimethicone in their products?
They use dimethicone in some of their products because it acts as a skin protectant and conditioning agent. They understand that there is concern with this ingredient. They take this very seriously, as they do with all of their ingredients. And yet, they use it because they know that it is safe. Dimethicone is a silicone based polymer. Silicon is ubiquitous in the earth and silicon dioxide is common sand. Silicon, like carbon, can form polymers. Dimethicone in its simplest form (which they use) is a fluid mixture of siloxane polymers. It is clear, inert, non-toxic and non-flammable. Dimethicone has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, and the panel concluded that these ingredients were safe for use in cosmetics. The CIR Expert Panel considered it unlikely that any silicone polymers would be significantly absorbed into the skin due to the large molecular weight of these polymers – unlike smaller molecules like Parabens, propylene glycol, which they never use. Additionally, the FDA reviewed the safety of dimethicone and approved its use as a skin protectant active ingredient in over-the-counter drug products and as a food ingredient. Silicones or “cones” come in a large variety of chemical forms based on adding chemical substitutions to the base molecule. In their opinion, these derivatives may not be as healthy a choice as the simple molecule and they do not use them.

None of EO's products contain peanut or peanut oil but some products DO contain tree nut oils.

I have young boys. Should I be concerned about them using products that contain Lavender essential oil?
There has been some concern about Lavender essential oil causing hormone disruption in young boys. EO would love to talk about why this concern came up in the first place, and why it isn’t a problem for you and your family.

The whole thing started in Colorado, 2007. There was a doctor who diagnosed four cases of prepubertal gynecomasti, which is a condition in which young boys develop breasts. The boys were between the ages of 4 and 10, and all reportedly used products that contained lavender.

That’s where things get a little hard to follow. The doctor failed to name the products, list other ingredients, or show that the products contained lavender essential oil. The products named were; a healing balm, a styling gel, and a lavender scented lotion.

The lack of information leads EO to wonder what else was in the products and what was happening environmentally for these cases to crop up so close to each other.

Since they don’t have any other information from this study, they relied instead on modern studies that prove that Lavender essential oil has little to no estrogenetic effects when used in levels far higher than can be found in any body care product (like 20,000 times more). They also rely on the thousands of years of lavender use without any report of this oil creating estrogenetic effects on young boys (or anyone, for that matter.)

EO Story
In 1995, Brad and Susan were asked to create five essential oils blends for Bloomingdale’s holiday gift guide. In a garage on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, Susan and Brad began the creative process that would evolve over the next twenty years into hundreds of products researched, developed, manufactured, and shipped from our 56,000 sq. ft. facility in Marin County, CA to millions of happy people across the world.

Like most pioneers, Brad and Susan didn’t set out to change the world. They just wanted to do business the way they thought it should be done. When they were mixing batches of soap in their three gallon stock pot, they weren’t thinking about being pioneers in the cosmetics industry. But, that’s exactly where their ideals would take them.

As the product line grows, so does their family. Susan and Brad soon became 40 people, all working in the facility in Corte Madera. The growth continued steadily and today, they manufacture out of their San Rafael facility with over 90 employees. Through each stage of their growth, their product offering has been informed by how they can most authentically impact the personal care industry.

In 2004, they became a certified organic manufacturer. "We were certified by the Coalition of Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Because there are no certifications in the personal care or cosmetics industry for organic ingredients, we chose to follow the guidelines for food."

When Whole Foods asked them to make a hand sanitizer in 2006, they were happy to take on the challenge. Their dedication to non-GMO ingredients led them to an organic alcohol derived from sugar cane and their hand sanitizers were born. With FDA approval, EO became a certified OTC manufacturer and the world was introduced to hand sanitizers that smelled great and were gentle, moisturizing, and 99.9% effective against most common germs. EO is proud of their hand sanitizers, they’re the leading organic hand sanitizers on the market.

In 2011, they became the first personal care company to be certified non-GMO by the Non-GMO Verified Project. Since there are still no regulations on cosmetics or personal care items when it comes to certification of ingredients, they once again sought and obtained the certification used for food.
