Why a Supplement?
Folate is found naturally in dark-green vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, and fortified cereals, but most people do not eat enough foods that contain folic acid to fulfill their nutritional needs for this important vitamin. Some people at highest risk for Folic Acid deficiency and in need of a supplement include people who drink a lot of alcohol, which makes it difficult for your intestines to absorb folate. Further, if you have stomach problems that diminish your small intestine’s function, your body likely has a difficult time maintaining enough folate. And, maybe most important, if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, you need extra Folic Acid!
A Pregnant Woman’s – and Baby’s! – Best Friend
Folic Acid has been dubbed the “pregnancy superhero” in caring for mother and baby alike. That’s because it aids in DNA and RNA synthesis, particularly important in periods of rapid growth, such as puberty and during pregnancy. Folate plays a critical role in production of red blood cells and can help your baby’s neural tube develop into a brain and spinal cord. When you are pregnant, your growing baby absorbs a lot of your folic acid to develop properly, so it’s important that you have plenty of folic acid in your system for you and baby from the very start of pregnancy, when your baby’s brain and spinal cord are developing. Folate deficiency in pregnant women has been linked to fetal abnormalities, such as spina bifida and anencephaly (congenital absence of part or all of the brain). In fact, studies show that women who take Folic Acid before conception reduce the risk of having a baby with these neural tube defects by up to 60%!
Signs of Deficiency
Folic Acid deficiency shows itself with symptoms including persistent fatigue, graying of hair, tongue swelling, mouth sores, weakness, anemia, irritability, and paleness. Talk to your doctor if you think you might need to add Solgar Folic Acid to your regiment to help you stave off chronic diseases, tremendous discomfort, and increased risk of chronic health conditions.
