    Why Essential Oils?

    Magical Essences
Essential oils have been regarded with awe for centuries. The name ‘essential oil’ comes from theories in the Middle Ages of the fabled fifth element. There were believed to be four basic elements that made up all of existence: fire, water, air and earth. The elusive ‘soul’ of things was called the quintessential element or the fifth element. Over time it was shortened to essential. Alchemists swore that this element could change iron to gold… some believed it was the substance that held the planets in their orbits.

    Distillation & Extraction

While essential oils won’t turn iron into gold, they do have unique chemical makeups that captivate the minds and hearts of people around the world. It’s hard not to fall in love with a tiny bottle that contains the concentrated essence of hundreds of plants. Most essential oils today are steam distilled. This process separates out the aromatic essential oils from the solid plant matter. With steam distillation it can take thousands of pounds of plant matter to create just one liter of essential oil.

Other methods include expelling and solvent extraction. Expelling is simply using pressure to squeeze the essential oil out of the plant. This method is generally used for citrus oils. Solvent extraction uses substances such as CO2 to extract the essential oil. This method is used for delicate plants such as Rose and Jasmine which can be too fragile to withstand the distillation process.

    Good Scents (and more)
Around the world, essential oils are being studied in modern clinical trials to try to substantiate ancient claims of healing. Essential oils are being studied for their effectiveness as antibacterial agents, fungicides, insecticides, pain relief, stress reduction and skin problems. More than anything else, essential oils are scents. Both perfumery and aromatherapy have waxed poetic about the purity of plant essences. Many of today’s most well known perfumes are made with essential oils.

    Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy stems from the use of scent to help with mood and relaxation. Scent is one of the most impactful senses, it is the only place in the human body where the outside world comes into direct contact with the central nervous system. Scent is perhaps the sense with the most powerful impact on our emotional state. Scents travel through the nose and into the primitive centers of the brain before reaching the logic centers.

Aromatherapy is the practice of stimulating wellbeing through scent. Modern clinical studies have substantiated a few of the claims, such as Lavender being calming. However, scent seems to be very subjective. One person may relate a scent to feeling calm while others find that same scent energizing. So, while we can generalize with how scents make some people feel, the individual still has to try it for themselves to see what they love.

    Discover Your Essential Oils
The best way to start using essential oils is to start smelling them. Choose a bottle and open the cap. Take a deep inhalation, just letting the scent infuse your nose. Don’t think too hard, rather feel how it affects you. Essential oils are alive and, in their own way, they will speak to you. Remember, aromatherapy isn’t supposed to be rocket science… it’s just good scents.

    EO Product Commitment

EO is dedicated to making personal care products that nurture the people who use them, respect people who make them, and honor the planet we all share. They think the products put on skin are as important as what is put in the mouth. They like to know what’s inside their lotions, soaps, and shampoos. So, at EO, they research, develop, manufacture, and ship their own products. EO didn’t dream of being manufacturers - it’s hard work. But they learned that the only way to know that the quality inside every bottle was up to their standards was to make it themselves.

Over the last twenty years, as they grew from mixing blends in a three-gallon stock pot to producing hundreds of products in their 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility, they learned a lot about the cosmetics and personal care industry. The more they learned, the more they resolved to fight for transparency.

EO Products only use the words organic or non-GMO when the ingredient or product is certified by an outside agency. They spend less on marketing their products than they do on ingredients because they believe that effective, great smelling products speak for themselves. As a Certified B Corp, they think that people and their home planet are more important than net profits. They have never taken venture capital and have no plans to do so. EO uses sustainable packaging. They research & develop in house. Everything they make is cruelty free and gluten free. They refuse to make a product that they wouldn’t use on their own children or grandchildren. That means no synthetic fragrances or any ingredient that has been linked to allergies or sickness. They use pure essential oils to scent the products. They smell great and have soothing and uplifting effects on minds and spirits as well as bodies. They believe in a holistic approach to health. They believe healthy skin is beautiful.

Because they only share important and third party verified certifications on their labels, they thought they’d outline what the certifications mean as well as mention a few things EO doesn’t put on their labels.

    USDA Organic Certification Seal

This USDA seal means that at least 95% (excluding water) of the ingredients are organic. Although every single product EO makes contains organic ingredients, they only use the USDA Organic seal when all of the ingredients are certified food grade organic. Every product they make is made in their certified organic facility, and many of the ingredients are organic. They have been a certified organic manufacturer since 2004.

    Non-GMO
This seal means that the ingredients have been certified as containing no genetically modified organisms. Just like their organic certification, this seal is the same one used for food. EO was the first personal care company to be certified non-GMO in 2011. All of their ingredients are GMO free, but only those that have been verified by the Non-GMO Project have the seal.

    Synthetic Fragrance Free
EO's products are always free from synthetic fragrances and are only scented with pure essential oils. They will never use harmful synthetic fragrances. Ever. Not only do essential oils smell better than synthetics, they promote mind/body/spirit wellbeing with their aromatherapeutic effects.

    Quality
With chemists on staff guided by Susan’s artistry, they do not take formulation lightly. Every product is created in house; from research and development to manufacturing to shipping. They all work under the same roof for the same company and they make some of the best stuff on the planet.

    Cruelty Free
EO doesn't think beauty should come at the cost of other sentient beings. They have partnered with the Leaping Bunny organization to certify that their products are not tested on animals and that the ingredients used do not harm animals in labs or in the wild.

    Gluten Free
All of the EO products are gluten free, so customers who are sensitive or allergic to gluten can enjoy these products.

    PCR
Most of EO's packaging is made from 100% PCR or Post Consumer Recycled plastic. All of their packaging is BPA Free. They are constantly working with their packaging partners to find new and better ways to package the products. With hundreds of bottles, it can be challenging to find distributors that carry the size or shape needed for a new product in 100% PCR. EO uses their volume orders and undying persistence to convince all of their suppliers to use PCR. They work tirelessly towards the goal of 100% PCR in all of their packaging.

    B Corp
B Corporations value purpose, accountability, and transparency. They are for-profit businesses that put equal value on social and environmental issues as they do on profits. EO has been working with the same values since day one, and they’ve been a certified B Corp since January 1, 2012. To join the B Corp community they had to undergo a rigorous assessment, looking at areas such as transparency, governance, community, and environment.

    FAQ's

    Q. What’s the difference between EO and Everyone products?
    A.
Everyone products are quality, natural body care made for every body and priced for every budget. They come in larger sizes and many have versatile uses, like the 3-in-1 lotions and soaps. Everyone products are perfect for everyone in the family. They are non-GMO plant-based formulas made with ingredients responsibly sourced from around the world, just like EO, but the formulations are simpler. EO is a luxurious line of products that promote mind/body/spirit wellbeing. The formulations are more complex than Everyone and their signature blends reflect 20 years of experience working with essential oils and botanical actives. The EO brand allows them to use rare and exotic fragrances and ingredients. Both brands feature 100% natural, pure essential oils (EO stands for Essential Oils) – they never have and never will use synthetic fragrances.

    Q. Are EO products vegan?
    A.
Almost all EO products are vegan. The ones that are not vegan are easy to identify by the ingredient listed in the name of the product (for example, Oatmeal and Honey shampoo).

Most EO Products Are Vegan, but These Are Not:

    • EO Chamomile and Honey Shampoo and Conditioner
    • EO Sulfate Free Keratin Shampoo
    • EO Organic Peppermint Beeswax lip balm
    • EO Oatmeal and Honey bar soap

All other EO and Everyone products are completely vegan and none of their products are ever tested on animals. All testing, research, development, and manufacturing is done in a humans-only lab at their facility in Marin County, CA. EO Products, creator of EO and Everyone brands, is a certified green business, a certified B-Corporation, and the first certified non-GMO body care company. EO and Everyone products are also certified gluten free. Additionally, they are completely biodegradable and pH balanced. They have been manufacturing premium luxury body care products for 20 years using only the finest natural ingredients. While not all of their products are certified organic, they do opt for organic and wild-crafted ingredients whenever possible, and are a certified organic manufacturer.

    Q. Are EO kid’s soaps and shampoos tear free?
    A.
EO Products takes great pride in creating products that are good for both people and the planet. Everyone Kids Soaps are formulated with natural, mild soaps that are safe for children with skin allergies and sensitive skin. They specifically have not made these products ‘tear free’ since the ingredients commonly used to make products tear free are actually harmful to the eyes. Commonly used ingredients to make products tear free include anesthetizing agents like synthetic alkyl polyethoxylates and/or alkyl phenol polyethoxylates. These alkyl ingredients temporarily numb the eye so that the sting of the shampoo is not felt. These ingredients are commonly used in pesticide products to anesthetize insects and they can penetrate the skin and cause organ toxicity in people. EO soaps are natural and harmless, but it is always recommended to keep any soap out of the eyes. If any soap does get into the eyes, simply wash it out with lukewarm water.

    Q. I’m concerned about some of the ingredients. How do I know they are safe?
    A.
EO values their conscious customers and welcome the opportunity to tell them what the company is doing right in a world that has gone so bad. EO Products, creator of EO and Everyone brands, is a Certified B-Corporation. That means they voluntarily agree to 3rd party oversight to ensure they meet higher standards of transparency, accountability, and performance. EO recognizes the interdependence of all living things and take great pride in creating products that are good for both people and the planet. That philosophy is at the core of every aspect of their business, from developing formulas to sourcing ingredients to manufacturing and operations. For the past 20 years they have been creating body care products using the cleanest ingredients available that are also safe and effective. They manufacture their own products so they can ensure the ingredients and sub-ingredients are sourced from like-minded responsible suppliers who also follow sustainable practices. While it’s sometimes necessary to include ingredients to keep a product safe from spoilage or contamination, EO scientists draw on years of research and testing to find ingredients that will leave the least negative impact on the environment and consumers. EO continues to learn by following new research, and because they control manufacturing, are able to respond quickly by changing the formulas if necessary.

    Q. Why does EO use phyoxyethanol in their products?
    A.
Many customers are concerned about phenoxyethanol because there’s quite a bit of online controversy about its safety. Fundamentally, it’s poorly interpreted science. Effective preservatives are vital for ensuring safety. Most personal care products are made with a lot of water and a variety of nutrients, which makes an incredibly hospitable breeding ground for microorganisms. Consider all of the natural oils and botanicals in EO and Everyone products! Why they use it: EO uses phenoxyethanol in a very low concentration as a preservative in the products because the most accessible alternatives for these types of formulas include parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Both are classes of chemicals with demonstrable evidence of potential health risks, whereas phenoxyethanol is very safe at low levels. It’s been tested on the skin and eyes and it is non-irritating and non- sensitizing at levels of 2.2% or lower while being effective at only 1% concentrations. The European Union and Japan both approve its use up to that 1% level and EO formulas fall well below the recommendation at 0.5% or less (depending on the specific product). Most of the studies that have found significant negative health impacts are based on full-strength or high-dose exposures. In real life usage, exposures are quite small. That’s why it’s approved at levels up to 1%. It’s all about the final formulation. Even better, phenoxyethanol doesn’t react with other ingredients, air, or light. This kind of stability makes it an especially effective preservative. What’s more, it’s included in the Handbook of Green Chemicals and is also Whole Foods Premium Body Care approved. Their standards, developed by a team of scientists over the course of years, are some of the strictest available.

    Q. How is the Palm Oil used in EO products sourced?
    A. EO understands Palm Oil is a hot topic on a lot of minds and they appreciate customers' concern for the environment and animals. Their Palm Oil comes from Brazil where there are no orangutans or other large primates. At EO Products, they recognize the interdependence of all living things and take great pride in creating products that are good for both people and the planet. That philosophy is at the core of every aspect of their business, from sourcing and manufacturing, to packaging and operations. They make environmental stewardship a priority over profits so that you can feel good about using EO products, knowing they were made with honesty and integrity. They don’t think sentient beings should suffer for beauty so they source their Palm Oil from responsible producers that follow sustainable practices.

    Q. Why does EO use dimethicone in their products?
    A.
They use dimethicone in some of their products because it acts as a skin protectant and conditioning agent. EO understands that there is concern with this ingredient. They take this very seriously, as they do with all their ingredients. And yet, they use it because they know that it is safe. Dimethicone is a silicone based polymer. Silicon is ubiquitous in the earth and silicon dioxide is common sand. Silicon, like carbon, can form polymers. Dimethicone in its simplest form (which we use) is a fluid mixture of siloxane polymers. It is clear, inert, non-toxic, and non-flammable. Dimethicone has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, and the panel concluded that these ingredients were safe for use in cosmetics. The CIR Expert Panel considered it unlikely that any silicone polymers would be significantly absorbed into the skin due to the large molecular weight of these polymers – unlike smaller molecules like Parabens, propylene glycol, which they never use. Additionally, the FDA reviewed the safety of dimethicone and approved its use as a skin protectant active ingredient in over-the-counter drug products and as a food ingredient. Silicones or “cones” come in a large variety of chemical forms based on adding chemical substitutions to the base molecule. In EO's opinion, these derivatives may not be as healthy a choice as the simple molecule and they do not use them.

    Q. Do EO products contain Peanuts or tree nuts?
    A.
None of EO products contain peanut or peanut oil but some of their products do contain tree nut oils.

The following tree nut oils are used in some of EO's products:

    • Coconut Oil
    • Sweet Almond Oil
    • Macadamia Nut Oil
    • Babassu Oil

Products that contain these tree nut oils are:

    • EO Organic Bath Salts, Time Out
    • EO Smooth Serum
    • EO Hair Detangler
    • EO Body Oil French Lavender
    • EO Hair Repair
    • EO Pre Shampoo Therapy
    • All EO and Everyone Conditioners
    • All Everyone Lotions
    • Everyone Face Moisturizer
    • Everyone Nourish Body Oil
    • Everyone Good Love Body Oil
    • EO Organic Body Serum 01 Revitalizing
    • EO Ageless Coconut Cleansing Milk
    • EO Ageless Moroccan Lava Clay Exfoliating Scrub
    • EO Ageless Transformative Night Serum

    Q. I’m experiencing a reaction to one of EO's products, aren’t they supposed to be natural?
    A.
Natural, non-GMO and organic do not equate to allergen free. Natural products are made from plant and animal sources. People can be allergic to plants and animals. It is not unusual for people to have a reaction to plant extracts any more than it is for people to have seasonal allergies, or a food allergy. If you are experiencing a reaction, discontinue use immediately and see your health care provider if symptoms persist.

    Q. I never used to have a reaction to this product but I seem to be experiencing one now after years of use.
    A.
Prolonged exposure to small amounts of an allergen can create an allergic reaction. If you are mildly allergic to a plant, flower, or tree you may never notice a reaction unless you expose yourself to that ingredient regularly. If you are experiencing a reaction, discontinue use immediately and see your healthcare provider if symptoms persist.

    Q. Are EO products safe for septic, gray water, and water reclamation systems?
    A.
All EO and Everyone products are biodegradable. They are made with gentle plant-based ingredients and are pH balanced, safe for grey water systems and septic systems, and are a great choice for use on the lake, river, boat, and for outdoor bathing.

    Sustainable Manufacturing

EO researches, develops, formulates, makes, and manufactures over 300 products right where they live - in Marin County, California. They have always worked this way and always will. They’re passionate about making products with the best ingredients and the least impact on the planet.

They see manufacturing as a key element of true artistry. They are able to make adjustments based on the subtle differences in their plant-based ingredients. They have made quality a way of life. There is no separation in their facility. The chemists formulating are just steps away from the mixing and bottling of the products.

Every product EO creates is researched and developed in their facility. From concept to formulation, their in-house R&D team follows each product to completion. The R&D team seeks out cutting-edge botanicals and carefully combines them with tried and true formulas. Each new product they create goes through a rigorous process that can take years. EO won’t release anything until it’s right.

EO regularly tests every product that they make. Working with botanical ingredients means that every batch has subtle variations. Their team carefully watches the formulations of each batch of product and makes the small adjustments that are necessary to assure each and every product is up to their standards of excellence. They test each batch, and if there are any problems, they stop the line until fixed.

With their own manufacturing facility, they are able to innovate business practices. They have pioneered personal care manufacturing with their OTC and Organic Certified facility. They use a closed loop water cooling system which saves tens of thousands of gallons of water every year. When a batch of soap or lotion needs attention, the entire EO staff is available to make adjustments so that every bottle sent out the door is filled with products they’d use on themselves and their kids.

EO Products is proud to know their products are made right where they live. Their employees are treated well and paid a fair wage - something customers can’t be sure of when manufacturing is done in remote locations.

They are proud of what they do at EO Products. They know what goes into your favorite soap, shampoo, lotion, or body oil from formulation to bottling to packing and shipping it to your door. They know that everything they make is locally made, environmentally gentle, and of the highest quality.

    EO Story

EO stands for essential oils which are the heart and soul of everything they do at EO Products. Essential oils and creative collaboration are how the EO story begins, and how their company is defined. The culture of EO products is the essence of creative collaboration, the collective work of like minded people working towards a common goal. Their co-founders and co-CEOs, Susan Griffin-Black and Brad Black are the core of their collaborative spirit.

Once Upon a Time in a Garage
In 1995, Brad and Susan were asked to create five essential oils blends for Bloomingdale’s holiday gift guide. In a garage on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, Susan and Brad began the creative process that would evolve over the next twenty years into hundreds of products researched, developed, manufactured, and shipped from their 40,000 sq. ft. facility in Marin County, CA to millions of happy people across the world.

Like most pioneers, Brad and Susan didn’t set out to change the world. They just wanted to do business the way they thought it should be done. When they were mixing batches of soap in their 3 gallon stock pot, they weren’t thinking about being pioneers in the cosmetics industry. But, that’s exactly where their ideals would take them.

    Love Life, Live Clean
Susan and Brad wanted to work the way they lived; inspired, healthy, in touch with nature and generous. They had a simple vision, they wanted to live like they were retired. For them, that meant spending time with family and friends, not worrying about money and making sure they were leaving the planet in a way that honored their children and grandchildren. Brad and Susan didn’t think there had to be a separation between work, home, and personal life. They believed in one life, one that valued transparency and trust.

Susan and Brad decided to name their company EO for the essential oils that were both their first products and the heart and soul of everything they would create. They chose the motto: Love Life, Live Clean. They felt that simple statement explained the purpose of their vision.

    Certification Pioneers
As the product line grew, so did their family. Susan and Brad soon became nearly 40 people all working in the facility in Corte Madera. They expanded the product line and learned about the personal care industry.

In 2004, they became a certified organic manufacturer - certified by the Coalition of Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). This certification is typically used for food. Because there are no certifications in the personal care or cosmetics industry for organic ingredients, EO chose to follow the guidelines for food.

When Whole Foods asked them to make a natural hand sanitizer in 2006, they were happy to take on the challenge. Their dedication to non-GMO ingredients led them to an organic alcohol derived from cane sugar and the hand sanitizers were born, proving to the world that no one had to choose between natural and effective. With FDA approval, EO became a certified OTC manufacturer and the world was introduced to hand sanitizers that were gentle, moisturizing, smelled great, and were effective against 99.9% of common germs. They’re proud of their hand sanitizers. They’re the leading natural hand sanitizer on the market.

In 2011, EO became the first personal care company to be certified non-GMO - certified by the Non-GMO Project. Since there are still no regulations on cosmetics or personal care items when it comes to certification of ingredients, they sought the certification used for food.

    Love Everyone
In 2012, EO took their ten years’ experience and launched a line of products designed for young people and large families that had little or no choice for natural body products. With a 32oz. bottle of soap priced at $10, these products were priced for every budget. Everyone for Every Body was born. Everyone’s immediate success led to a new facility in San Rafael. This 40,000 square foot space can accommodate EO's growing family for the time being.

Brad and Susan’s dream of one life filled with collaboration, creativity, and care is alive and well. They all work together under one roof to make some of the best personal care essentials in the world. EO offices smell like essential oils and the collaborative spirit and friendly atmosphere inspires them daily.

    Meet EO Products' Founders

Brad Black and Susan Griffin-Black had a simple vision about twenty years ago. They wanted to live like they were already retired. “When you’re retired,” says Brad, “you don’t stress about money. You care about the world you’re leaving to your kids and grandkids. You take things a little slower and a lot less seriously.” Their shared desire to live every day in ‘retirement’ led them to running EO Products, makers of EO and Everyone personal care products.

    Susan: The Alchemist
Susan Griffin-Black was born to be her own boss. From her first endeavor at eight selling lemonade to fund Beatles tickets, to co-owning two successful clothing stores at twenty-one, her driving sense of beauty and style was her guide. She followed her passion for design to San Francisco where she owned clothing stores that carried her own line of clothing and designed several lines for Esprit. It was on a trip to Europe that she first encountered essential oils in an apothecary shop and the love affair that would guide the next twenty years of her life began. She studied aromatherapy and the chemistry of perfumes and acquired her own collection of tiny glass bottles filled with flower and plant essences. When Bloomingdale’s asked her to make essential oil mixes for their holiday gift guide, Susan felt a dream had come true. Her dedication to Buddhism and its simple but elusive eightfold path has guided her decision making in business as well as life. Susan’s aesthetic and quiet strength pervades every aspect of EO. She has guided every product EO has made, adding a drop of this and a bit of that until it feels (and smells) right.

    Brad: Passion & Pride
Brad Black was buying organic cotton for his company, Maine-Iac, before anyone even knew what that meant. His passion for doing the right thing is apparent in his dynamic approach to life. He is the hands-on half of the team, creating a refill system from scratch, travelling to store locations to talk to brokers about company values and keeping an eye on manufacturing. His love for business started at a young age as well. He can’t remember a time he wasn’t selling produce, art, or plants to his neighbors and friends. Brad has been a pioneer in changing the way things are done in the personal care and cosmetics industry. His willingness to take things head on and not take ‘no’ for an answer made EO an industry leader in sustainable business practices. Brad’s regular blog is a collection of reflections, observations, and rants about the challenges of being authentic in an industry that seems to value flash over substance.

    Very rough
Well, health wise I’m assuming they do what they are supposed to do but calling them a ‘lozenge’ is a stretch. After the first one (directions say to let it dissolve, do not chew) my mouth got sore. Those things are ROUGH!!! I ended up dissolving them in boiling water (not an easy task) just to get them useable.
Needless to say, after a week or so I quit using. They need to be smoother and actually have the ability to dissolve.
