Description
Sonne's Intestinal Cleanser is a finely ground powder of imported psyllium husk and seed. As it contains primarily fiber and no laxative or herbal stimulants, Sonne's Intestinal Cleanser can be used on a daily basis to assist normal bowel peristalsis. (In contrast, laxatives and herbal preparations stimulate the peristaltic muscles of the bowel, and, if used regularly create a “dependency” and weaken normal colon function.) Psyllium has a hydrophilic (water-loving) action that softens hardened mucous lining the bowel wall, facilitating its elimination. Psyllium can help achieve a high fiber diet, which is so important in maintaining good bowel health, and is now recognized as important to help maintain a healthy cholesterol level already in the normal range.
Dietary fiber is a necessary component of the diet that is glaringly lacking in the typical western diet. Lack of dietary fiber can cause constipation, elevated cholesterol levels, and has been linked to increased incidence of certain cancers. Psyllium is a rich source of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. Taking psyllium on a daily basis can supplement the diet with high quality fiber, and ensure at least one normal bowel movement every day.
The psyllium Sonne's uses is derived from a small plant that is grown in Pakistan and India, Plantago ovato blond. In 1833, the French Dictionaire Universale de Materia Medica recorded the virtues of Plantago psyllium as a “home remedy” and referred to it asbeing “emollient, soothing, relaxing, etc.” In Pharacographia of Fluckiger and Hanbury (1874), there appeared a complete physical description of the seeds: “A decoction of the seeds (one part to 70 parts of water) is employed in India as a cooling demulcent drink. The seeds powdered and mixed with sugar, or made gelatinous with water, are sometimes given for chronic diarrhea.” This citation highlights the need to take plenty of water with any psyllium product. The volume of water needed is one reason why psyllium should not be taken in capsule or tablet form.
A British Pharmaceutical Codex for 1911 includes a statement about the psyllium plant and its useful properties: "The seed coat contains a large quantity of mucilage, and the seeds are taken dry or mixed with water in chronic diarrhea and in atony (weakness of a muscle or organ) of the intestine with constipation. They are much used in Continental practice." This is why Sonne's uses the whole seed and not just the husk, as many products on the market do. When psyllium is mixed with water, a mucilaginous mass is formed by virtue of the mucilage, which exudes from the cell walls. The outer covering of the seed possesses the bulk-forming properties. It contains no irritants to stimulate peristaltic action in the digestive tract. It possesses no laxative or cathartic ingredients. Any effect obtained is entirely due to whatever mechanical stimulus the added fecal bulk affords and to the lubrication provided by the mucilage from the seed.

These substances stimulate the muscles of the colon wall to contract in order to produce a bowel movement. When used on a continuous basis, laxatives can become habit-forming. This creates a situation where the colonic muscles will not contract by themselves, because they are dependent upon some external stimulus. How does Sonne's Intestinal Cleanser (psyllium) product differ from others?
Sonne's Psyllium product is a special grade and size (mesh) of psyllium. This is normal. As the bottles are transported, the product tends to settle so that it may seem like the bottle is not quite full. But, if you were to weigh each bottle you will find that there is more than 10 oz. - the net weight we print on the bottle (Sonne's fills by weight, not by volume).
I am taking your Intestinal Cleanser/Psyllium product (with or without the Detoxificant/Bentonite) and I am experiencing gas, bloating, and pains in my abdomen...
How are you taking the product?
- You want to be sure that you are not taking too much. The recommended serving size is 1 heaping teaspoon in 4-8 oz. of water or juice, shaken thoroughly. Another thing that you can do is to make sure you drink plenty of water. After drinking the initial mixture, drink another 4-8 oz. of water.
- One possible cause of this discomfort is that you are not drinking enough water with the psyllium seed. This product swells and if you do not drink enough water, it can be very hard to digest and keep the psyllium moving through the digestive tract.
- Another possible cause of your discomfort stems from the fact that you are most likely taking this product because you have poor bowel elimination or are constipated in some way. Frequently in conditions such as this, portions of the colon have very narrow passages. These constrictures of the colon, as they are called, can be so narrow that when the semi-solid mass of the psyllium reaches one of these narrow passages, it can barely move through. The result is that you get a blockage and any food that you have eaten since drinking the psyllium will back up. This can produce the symptoms you speak of.

Suggested Use

Very rough
Well, health wise I’m assuming they do what they are supposed to do but calling them a ‘lozenge’ is a stretch. After the first one (directions say to let it dissolve, do not chew) my mouth got sore. Those things are ROUGH!!! I ended up dissolving them in boiling water (not an easy task) just to get them useable.
Needless to say, after a week or so I quit using. They need to be smoother and actually have the ability to dissolve.
