Real Food
If it's not real, it's not Annie's. That's why every ingredient they use to make their food is chosen with care. The farmers who grow their ingredients are just as passionate about quality and sustainability as they are, and they value the people and places that help their product travel from farm to fork. They make it their responsibility to take on important issues-such as supporting organic practices and honest labeling - so you can be sure that the products you buy from Annie's are as authentic as possible.
Healthy People
Since the beginning, they've been dedicated to their community at large: their employees, local community, and programs that make a difference nationwide. They give back to programs that connect people directly to real food, including grants to help establish and sustain school gardens that provide children access to education about healthier food; scholarships to college students studying sustainable agriculture; and partnerships with like-minded organizations committed to healthier people and a healthier planet.
Clean Planet
The nourishing food they make starts with rich soil, fresh water, and clean air, and so they're committed to doing their part to make this planet a better place to live and eat, not only for our generation, but for many more to come.
Carbon Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of their Products
Since the beginning, Annie's has been committed to making a difference both in the products they make and how they do business. For Annie's, sustainability is about where they can have the most impact, which is why they're focused on where and how their food is grown.
Sustainability is not only about lessening their impact on the earth they all share; it's also about helping to make a positive difference where they have the greatest opportunity to do so. This past year, they were able to conduct a category-level life cycle assessment (LCA) of a representative sampling of their products. LCA is a methodology that assesses environmental impacts through all the stages of a product's life, from "cradle-to-grave". They specifically chose to focus this analysis on carbon.
They know that carbon isn't the only important issue, but they needed to narrow their focus to complete a comprehensive analysis with available resources. Through this work they quantified the carbon "hotspots" across Annie's product lifecycle, from the farm all the way through to the consumer's use and disposal. This helped them identify where their products have the biggest impacts from an energy and greenhouse gas emissions perspective.
- Material Production - At 41%, the majority of their products' impacts take place at the farm where their ingredients are grown - i.e., material production.
- Processing - Their manufacturers and co-packers who make their products contribute 11% of their products' impacts.
- Packaging - Their packaging production accounts for 11% of their products' impacts.
- Distribution - Their products are distributed primarily via truck to retailer locations; although these "food miles" are important, they represent just 16% of their products' impacts.
- Use - Interestingly, 19% of their products' impacts take place in consumers' homes. Much of this comes from their macaroni-and-cheese because it requires gas or electricity to prepare.
- End of Life - The final stage of product and packaging disposal makes up 2% of their products' impacts. They're excited about what they've discovered in their first LCA. They've got a lot more to learn, but they're committed to the path of sustainability for the long haul.

It all started with Annie
In 1989, Annie Withey co-founded Annie's with Andrew Martin with the goal of making a healthy and delicious macaroni and cheese for families. She also wanted show by example that a successful business could also be socially responsible. Annie chose Bernie, her pet rabbit, to be the brand's "Rabbit of Approval," and she put her own address and phone number on each box to encourage customers to connect with her.
Annie's Farm
Today, Annie lives on her certified organic farm in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters where she grows a wide variety of vegetables and flowers for her local co-op and farmer's market. Annie remains involved in the business, responding to customers and writing the personal letters you'll find on the back of their boxes. More importantly, she remains the inspiration and corporate conscience for their company and the entire family of Annie's products.
Staying true to their roots
More than 20 years after their founding, the values that Annie started with still guide their company every day. They're a mission-driven business grounded in using natural and organic ingredients to make great-tasting products that consumers love. They source ingredients only from places and people they trust. And they work hard to act as a positive role model for consumers and other businesses.
