The Raw Rev Story
"Our mission is to create irresistible, affordable, convenient superfoods using certified organic, mostly raw ingredients. They're as good for the environment as they are for you, making the world cleaner and healthier with every bite." - Alice Benedetto, RN, President & Founder
Raw Rev was launched in Alice Benedetto's home kitchen in 2004. A registered nurse and natural food chef, Alice was looking for something that she could give to her kids - a healthy snack that also tasted good. Alice started slowly, feeding her delicious, natural snacks to friends and family, and then started selling small batches through local stores near her suburban home. When the first bars sold out within days, Alice knew that she was on to something.
With the encouragement of her husband Dave, Raw Rev expanded. Alice developed new flavors and taste combinations. Dave scoured factories for used equipment, ultimately putting together a production line of equipment once used at pizzerias, chocolate factories and bakeries. Ten years later Alice and Dave are producing millions of Raw Rev bars every year. The bars are now sold through major retailers both in the United States and overseas. Each one is still made at Alice and Dave's family owned factory just outside of New York City.
A lot has changed in the last decade, but some things are the same as they have always been. The ingredients are fresh. The taste is revolutionary. And the story is just beginning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all Raw Rev products raw?
While there are a number of definitions and opinions on what constitutes something being "raw", Raw Rev takes it to mean food that is uncooked, unprocessed, and organic. Raw Rev does not heat any ingredients in their facility. Some of theirbars are 100% raw, such as the Spirulina Dream and the Golden Cashew, while others vary in their raw content, such as the chocolate flavored bars which contain dutch-processed cocoa. Generally, the bars range from approximately 80% to 100% raw. Since ingredient sources can change and there is no legal standard for "raw", Raw Rev does not claim a specific "percentage raw" on their labels.
Are Raw Rev products all gluten-free?
Yes. Their ingredients are all gluten-free from non-cross-contaminated sources. Their facility is gluten-free, and they periodically test their products as a precaution.
What about the oat, barley and wheatgrass used in the Apple Cinnamon bars? Do these bars contain gluten?
No. Please see above.
Who is Raw Rev's kosher authority?
All Raw Rev products are certified kosher by Rabbi Reuven Flamer of Natural Food Certifiers in Spring Valley, NY.
Are Raw Rev products vegan?
Yes. Raw Rev products are all vegan, as is their facility.
What about the Cherry Chocolate Chunk and the Almond Butter Cup? There's a warning that says "made in a facility that produces milk products".
The vegan, kosher, organic chocolate chips and chunks Raw Rev uses are manufactured in Italy in a plant that also handles dairy. They are kosher parve which means there is an inspection to ensure there is no dairy contamination. However, in the interest of full disclosure and consumer safety Raw Rev has printed this statement on their packages.
Some of Raw Rev's products which contain chocolate chips/chunks list soy lecithin as an ingredient. If I have a soy allergy will this affect me?
Research has shown that soy lecithin does not contain detectable soy protein, so most people with a soy allergy will not be affected by this product. Please consult a doctor to determine if this food is safe for you.
I've read some articles about agave being bad. Is this true?
There have been a number of health scare articles written over the past few years regarding agave. These articles are often written by people pushing their own agendas, such as marketing competing sweeteners. Raw Rev believes agave is a safe, natural sweetener.
Raw Rev's low temperature processed, organic blue weber agave syrup differs from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in a few major ways:
HFCS comes from genetically modified (GMO) corn. Not only is corn an allergen, but the crops are also exposed to glyphosate-based herbicides and potentially other chemicals not found in organic crops. These herbicides and chemicals are considered by many to be toxic for consumers and the environment.
HFCS is a mass produced, highly refined and processed ingredient, originally designed for the conventional soft drink industry to ensure consistency of flavor in industrially manufactured soda products.
I've noticed the cocoa used in Raw Rev bars is processed with alkali. What's up with that?
While they are strong proponents of purely raw foods, Raw Rev also strives to offer a great tasting, eminently affordable delivery medium. There are pros and cons to both raw and alkalized cocoas. Raw Rev has chosen alkalized cocoa for Raw Rev based on supply availability, consistency of quality and flavor, and shelf life. Alkalized cocoa is an antioxidant-rich superfood and a key ingredient for Raw Rev's # 1 selling organic bar brand.
Dutch-processing (alkalizing), a method in use for nearly 200 years, makes the cocoa beans less acidic before pressing out the cocoa butter. In addition, the natural mineral potassium carbonate is used to neutralize some of the acid in the cocoa and improve the flavor.
While some argue that this process destroys the flavanol antioxidants in the cocoa, there are a number of scientists who refute this claim. In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, scientists reported that dutched cocoa powders, especially the light and medium dutched cocoa powders, retained significant amounts of flavanol antioxidants, placing them in the top 10% of flavanol-containing foods among those listed in the USDA Procyanidin Database.
"This is an important finding for people who like all things chocolate", said Ken Miller, the lead author of the paper. "Because cocoa powder is one of the richest sources of flavanol antioxidants to start with, even light or medium dutch-processed cocoa powders still retain significant levels of the beneficial antioxidants."
I'm curious about Raw Rev's Spirulina Dream bar. What's Spirulina and why is the bar green?
Spirulina is a highly nutritious blue-green algae that is 100% natural. It was a significant food source for a number of civilizations (such as the Aztecs) and has been widely used as a dietary supplement since the 1970s.
Spirulina contains rich vegetable protein in excess of 60% by weight, approximately three times that of fish or beef, and is also a good source of vitamin B 12, a nutrient which is particularly lacking in a vegetarian diet. Spirulina has a wide range of minerals (including iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium), a high volume of cell-protecting beta-carotene (five times more than carrots, 40 times more than spinach), and is a good source of gamma-linolein acid, which may reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Other benefits of Spirulina include boosting the immune system, improving digestion, detoxifying the body, boosting energy levels, and controlling appetite. Raw Rev's organic Spirulina is grown and processed on a tropical island in the South China Sea in a GMP-certified facility.
I've noticed Raw Rev packaging used to say 'Peanut-free' and now has a black mark where 'Peanut-free' used to be. They also have a peanut warning now. What happened?
Customers have overwhelmingly requested that Raw Rev create peanut products. As a warning to consumers, Raw Rev recently changed their packaging, primarily to eliminate the "Peanut-Free" claims in advance of introducing peanuts into their facility. Bars marked EXP26SEP14 or later are made on machines that have also been used to test recipes containing peanuts. Raw Rev does clean their machinery between runs and frequently spot tests to minimize possibility of cross-contamination. However, this is no guarantee that traces of peanut will not enter any given proeuct.
Are Raw Rev bars non-GMO?
Yes, all of Raw Rev's ingredients are certified non-GMO and documentation has been submitted to the Non-GMO Project.
What is the shelf life of Raw Rev bars?
Raw Rev bars have a one year shelf life from the date of production.
How do Raw Rev bars have a one year shelf life if only natural, non-preservative ingredients are used?
Raw Rev uses naturally shelf-stable ingredients and their packaging eliminates air and moisture to prevent spoilage.
