However, you must also note that “the more, the better” rule does not always apply to supplements. Often, having too much can have deleterious effects. Take the case of a 2010 study reported in JAMA were very high doses of vitamin D in women was linked to more fractures and falls. In rare cases, vitamin D can be toxic wherein calcium buildup in soft tissues and arteries can happen and likewise formation of kidney stones. The Harvard website recommends 4,000 IU as the upper limit that can be considered safe.

We know that bones are made of phosphate and calcium. Vitamin D plays a role in the dynamic process of remodeling bones that is why without adequate Vitamin D it can lead to misshapen, brittle, or thin bones. Did you know that insufficient vitamin D for prolonged periods is a factor of having osteoporosis? It is because a deficiency in Vitamin D contributes to reduced absorption of calcium. Further, a deficiency in Vitamin D may also negatively affect muscle building and hence a difficulty when it comes to exercising.

In fact, Vitamin D has a moniker of natural immune modulator because it helps regulate various immunological functions that are affected by inflammation. As such, Vitamin D is believed to help prevent all types of autoimmune diseases. Further, in another study, vitamin D supplementation in children with asthma showed a decrease in the likelihood of contracting the flu.
