BioGaia Aims to Supply Helpful Probiotics to the Whole Family

Focused on making safe, useful probiotics that help improve the digestive health of the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest, BioGaia is a Swedish company now serving the world. All of their supplements are based around patented strains of Lactobacillus reuteri, an important microorganism in humans’ friendly internal flora. It’s useful for everything from soothing colic in infants to restoring the digestive balance after an adult course of antibiotics, or simply for maintenance of good digestion. BioGaia developed their own strains for specific health-boosting applications.

Delivering Pure, Safe, Vigorously Helpful Probiotics is BioGaia’s Mission

With over 200 clinical studies of L. reuteri, BioGaia has been able to develop probiotics supplements with extremely safe, functional traits. Most of their products contain 100 million CFUs (colony forming units) per dose, a good dosage for maintaining excellent digestive condition for many people. The strains are grown under strictly controlled conditions, which prevents them from getting contaminated by other microorganisms. Each new batch is tested to ensure that it doesn’t contain toxins, and that it’s free of any transferrable genes for antibiotic resistance.

The Varied History of BioGaia’s Probiotics Exploration

The Lactobacillus reuteri strain at the heart of BioGaia was first used back in the 1980s as a way to preserve organic vegetables. Peter Rothschild and Jan Anwall went on from there to find new applications for this probiotic organism, founding BioGaia in 1990. The company got off to a rough start trying to market the probiotics to poultry farms in the USA. However, their head researcher, Dr. Ivan Casas, had an important insight – that the tiny organisms could help boost human internal health. He found the best strains from human breast milk from the Andes, and the company’s success took off from there.
