    Equal Exchange

Starting with the goal of humanizing the food system, Equal Exchange works to bring the real, the authentic, and the sustainable into people’s lives with quality foods. Rooted deeply in fair trade and cooperative principles, the company offers chocolate, cocoa, coffee, tea, avocados, and bananas with a difference. Their rich, delicious organic foods provide wholesome nutrients, well-being, and comfort, while supporting both healthier bodies and small eco-friendly farms across the world. The results are melt-in-your-mouth chocolates and vitamin-rich fruits with a conscience.

Equal Exchange is All About Building Fairness & Cooperation

Ever since Equal Exchange was launched in 1986, their sources have all been small farms using sustainable methods and benefiting local communities. Today, they’ve got more than 40 small farmer organizations that provide the ingredients that go into their chocolates, teas, coffees, and fruit products. These are located on every continent, including South America, Africa, Asia, and even some right at home in the USA. They also partner with USAID, Fair Trade organizations like Traidcraft and Ten Thousand Villages, and work with interfaith partners that include 13 different faith organizations.

Equal Exchange brings Democratic Principles to the Workplace

Unlike most companies, Equal Exchange lives up 100% to its name by being worker-owned. Run by 120 worker-owners, the enterprise is run as a shared community in which each worker has an equal vote in deciding the direction of the company. As stakeholders in the company community, they bring democratic principles into the workplace and create a tiny mirror of the idealized American system. They believe that this principle makes them better able to deal with their suppliers on an equal, Fair Trade footing, too.
