Fisherman’s Friend Uses Powerful Menthol & Eucalyptus to Fight Coughs

For more than 150 years, Fisherman’s Friend has been in the business of stopping even the toughest of coughs. Their powerful menthol and eucalyptus lozenges launched the company’s success in 1865 and are still popular sellers to this day. Originally formulated to defeat the coughs of men working on North Atlantic trawlers, this extra menthol formula forms the foundation of many of their products. Only a few materials are found in each lozenge, including ingredients like eucalyptus oil, capsicum, natural licorice, and a bit of sugar. This limited formula makes them ideal for those seeking straightforward cough solutions.

Natural Flavors Found in Each Fisherman’s Friend Product

Fisherman’s Friend uses natural flavoring options instead of the artificial flavors found in a number of conventional products. Their lozenges are also free of gluten, which can be a huge plus to anyone with sensitivities to gluten. There are no animal products in any of their creations, making them suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The lozenges come in alluring flavors like mint and cherry. Recently, to keep up with healthy diet trends, the company released sugar-free cherry lozenges in the USA.

How an Undiscovered Health Treasure was Discovered by the World

Fisherman’s Friend started when James Lofthouse, a pharmacist in Fleetwood, crafted lozenges to help sailors. The liquid cough remedies of the time were not the best option as ships tumbled about on the high seas. The lozenges remained a well-kept secret of sailors until the 1970s. When vacationers to the region “discovered” the lozenges, they became something of an overnight success. In fact, they became so popular that the company won the Queen’s Award for Exports in 1983.
