Maine Coast Sea Vegetables Harvests the Sea for Their Customers

In a way, it’s odd that people haven’t taken more advantage of the vast gardens of nutritious plants growing in the oceans and seas. Fortunately, Maine Coast Sea Vegetables has become aware of the nutritional value of seaweeds and kelp and offer these healthy vegetables for all to enjoy. Fortunately, Maine Coast Sea Vegetables provides an easy way to enjoy these power-packed, nutritionally dense vegetables. Organic kelp flakes can be added to soups or stews or even mixed with side dishes. Dulse is a chewy seaweed, even in its dried state and not only is good in recipes, but can even be nibbled right out of the bag. Maine Coast Sea Vegetables also makes combinations that may help to add interest as well as nutrition of cooking.

Seaweeds Are Mother Nature’s Nutritional Heavy Hitters

Because the seaweeds used by Maine Coast Sea Vegetables are ‘marinated’ in the mineral rich waters of the ocean, they are packed with trace elements and minerals. It may be surprising to some to learn that seaweeds actually contain all of the 56 trace elements and minerals that the body needs for proper metabolic function. Seaweeds are also an excellent natural source of iodine which is critical for support of the thyroid gland, one of the endocrine system’s most important glands. Sea vegetables have significant amounts of B vitamins, and actually are a good source of protein. Maine Coast Sea Vegetables make it possible for those living far from the coasts to benefit from these valuable sea vegetables.

Maine Coast Sea Vegetables Was Inspired by a Bowl of Miso Soup

Back in 1971, it was actually a bowl of soup that led to the founding of Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. Linette and Shep Erhart had made miso soup using some of the seaweeds gathered from the ocean outside their home, and were pleasantly surprised at the positive feedback they received from friends and family. This encouraged them to start harvesting and drying some of the nutritious sea vegetables and offer them up to others. In the beginning Shep and Linette were only able to gather about 200 pounds of sea vegetables since this was strictly a husband and wife operation (with some encouragement from their little one). Maine Coast Sea Vegetables has now grown to where 40 employees help to harvest and process about 100,000 pounds of sea vegetables every year. From the rugged coast of Maine to kitchens everywhere.
