    • FAQ

How does Gaia Herbs identify their products?
Gaia Herbs conducts DNA barcoding to establish the identity of all raw material and to create a SRM (standard reference material) DNA herbal barcode library for raw materials. This process ensures that adulteration is not possible.

What is the Phyto-Cap made from?
Their vegetarian Liquid Phyto-Cap is made from cellulose from pine bark.

What is the source of their alcohol?
Gaia Herbs uses 190-proof distilled alcohol derived from corn and wheat and labeled 'grain alcohol', and 190-proof Certified Organic, GMO-free alcohol from corn and sugarcane for all products that are labeled as Certified Organic in 'organic grain alcohol'. In 2015, Gaia Herbs is transitioning over to alcohol derived from sugar cane only, organic and non-organic. The new labels will read 'alcohol' to allow flexibility for using a different type of corn and wheat free alcohol in the future.

What is the source of their lecithin in their Liquid Phyto-Cap products?
In 2015 Gaia Herbs is transitioning over to non-GMO sunflower lecithin exclusively to replace their previous lecithin sourced from non-GMO soy and labeled as 'soy lecithin (non GMO)'. The new labels will read 'lecithin (non-GMO)' to allow flexibility for using a different type of non-soy/non-GMO lecithin in the future.

      Do their products contain gluten?
There are no gluten containing ingredients in Gaia Herbs' products with the exception of Reflux Relief (made by Aboca for Gaia Herbs) which contains Barley (listed on the label). Their 190 proof grain alcohol (from wheat and corn) used for extraction, is distilled and certified gluten-free by the manufacturer. The distillation process eliminates proteins (gluten is a protein). Gaia Herbs' oats (Wild Oats Milky seed) are grown on their organic farm and are not cross contaminated with any gluten containing grains, therefore they are also considered to be gluten-free. Their products do not go through a gluten-free certification process.

What is Gaia Herbs policy on GMOs?
Gaia Herbs Inc. is committed to using and supporting only non-GMO materials. Gaia never purchases GMO herbs and/or ingredients, with the exception of non-organic alcohol which cannot be reliably procured from non-GMO crops. Gaia does a purchasing review to ensure they eliminate the possibility of "hidden" GMO's making their way into their products. They use a documented certified non-GMO source of soy lecithin, which is used as an emulsifier in some of their encapsulated products. All herbs propagated and grown on Gaia Herbs' farm are certified organic and therefore GMO free. The seed used in all their certified organically grown crops is gathered here on their own farm or produced from other certified organic growers and is GMO free. In rare instances where they cannot obtain certified organic seed, they obtain seed from suppliers fully committed to non-GMO practices. Gaia also purchases as many organic and/ or ecologically harvested ingredients as possible to avoid any GMO. Gaia is currently and will continue to do everything possible to ensure that their products are non-GMO.

      What does weight-to-volume ratio mean?
This is the most common way to measure the strength of a liquid herbal extract or tincture. The number on the left represents the amount of plant material used to produce the extract, while the number on the right represents the weight of the solvent used. Gaia's ratios are between 1:1 and 1:3. The liquids in many other brands are between 1:4 and 1:10. A 1:1 ratio means that 8 lbs. of raw herb are used per every 1 gallon of alcohol. (One gallon of alcohol weighs 8 lbs.) A 1:2 ratio means that 8 lbs. of herb are used per every 2 gallons of alcohol, and a 1:3 ratio means that 8 lbs. of herb are used per every 3 gallons of alcohol.

How long are herbal extracts good for?
Alcohol-based extracts have a 5-year expiration date and alcohol-free extracts have a 3-year expiration date. Their Liquid Phyto-Caps carry a 3-year expiration date. This is based on the date of manufacture. They do not need to be refrigerated to stay viable.

Why does Gaia sometimes extract FRESH herbs and other times DRIED herbs?
Gaia uses fresh herbs when the compounds and actives in those herbs are best extracted fresh. They look through the windows of science and tradition to determine the best extraction method for each specific plant. Gaia Herbs conducts analytical testing of raw material prior to extraction to verify its potency and purity. They have found that drying certain herbs can concentrate the active constituents, while other times certain herbs - such as Slippery Elm, lose their active principles (in this case mucilage) when dried. One of the major advantages Gaia holds is that they own and operate a 250 acre Certified Organic Farm which allows them to process fresh plant material immediately after harvest. They typically extract the following herbs when they are fresh: Wild Oats, American Skullcap, Slippery Elm, Alder bark, Marshmallow root, Nettle seed, and Black Walnut hulls.

What is the best way to store extracts and Phyto-Caps?
The best way to store extracts is in a cool, dry place, out of the sun, like a cupboard or pantry. They do not need to be refrigerated, but should be kept from high temperatures. The Phyto-Caps should not be refrigerated and should also be stored in a cool, dry place, away from extremes of temperature.

Why does this extract look different from the last one I bought?
Levels of chemical constituents vary quite naturally. Constituents are affected by growing conditions such as soil, weather, and altitude and by factors such as age of the plant, when it was harvested and where the seed came from. This means that each batch of extract will be slightly different. Extracts that are standardized will have consistent levels of the marker compound, but will require varying amounts of plant material to get that level. This may affect the appearance of the extract. There is also the fact that liquid extracts are solutions, which means that the dissolved substance (solute) may fall out of solution, especially considering the high concentration of Gaia's extracts. If this happens, you will see small particles of plant constituents in the extract. Vigorous shaking will often cause the solute to go back into solution.

Why does the extract inside the Phyto-Cap look separated or discolored?
Occasionally, some natural separation may occur with the Phyto-Cap products after encapsulation. This does not alter the quality of the product.

On their labels under suggested use what does "between meals" mean?
"Between meals" means that for optimal absorption, you should take the product away from food, either half an hour before eating, or 2 hours or more after eating.

Why is the Dry Herb Equivalent statement not included for some Liquid Phyto-cap products?
You may have noticed that the labels for some of their Liquid Phyto-caps do not include the "Dry Herb Equivalent" comparison number they traditionally put under the Supplement Facts box on their cartons/labels. Due to the variability of bioactivity in these botanicals, it is difficult to assign a dry herb equivalent as the amount of raw material needed to meet their label claim varies batch to batch. To change their packaging for this voluntary comparison each time they make the product would significantly impact the efficiency of their manufacturing process. Therefore, they have decided to remove the dry herb equivalent reference from the cartons/labels for these items. Consumers can be assured, however, that the milligram extract amount reported in their Supplement Facts box, however, does not vary batch to batch.

What is the capsule size used for their encapsulated products?
Gaia Herbs uses a size 0 (zero) capsule for all their encapsulated products.

      Gaia's Farm

      A Living Laboratory
Located in the southwestern Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina on 250 acres of land in one of the most diverse bioregions in North America, Gaia Farm is the only farm of its kind with an on-site state-of-the-art laboratory and processing facility.

In their fields, in their laboratory, and in their production facility, they study, observe, and learn from Nature-applying these lessons to the cultivation of many of the flowers, herbs, trees, roots, and grasses-and how to best facilitate the delivery of the medicinal bioactive constituents within these plants to the people who need them.

Their commitment to purity, integrity, and potency starts with the soil through their comprehensive organic fertility standards. Plants and seeds are selected only from sources whose organic methods and plant quality can be verified. Then they observe the plants as they grow from seedling to maturity, learning their unique life cycles, using analytical testing to measure bioactivity levels, and harvesting only when peak levels have been reached.

The same level of care is also applied when their herbs enter production in their facility through their rigid purity standards for sourcing and dedication to integrity using their right + right extraction and low + low concentration methods to product extracts of the highest potency.

      Invested in Quality
No other liquid herbal manufacturer in the United States invests a larger percentage of its operating income into as many vertically integrated layers of quality control than Gaia Herbs. These funds are used to nurture continuous improvements and research into best practices at every stage of thier operation from seed to shelf, including: seed selection, soil preparation, organic farming, manufacturing, validation technologies, and product packaging.

      Stringent Organic Certification
Since their founding in 1986, Gaia Herbs has been committed to upholding the rigorous standards required of a Certified Organic Grower (COG) as determined by Oregon Tilth, one of the strictest and most stringent organic certifiers in the nation. As a result, Gaia Farm (established in 1997) has earned its reputation as one of the leading growers and producers of Certified Organic herbs and herbal products in the United States.

They chose to meet the standards of Oregon Tilth specifically because they are the most uncompromising and thorough certifying bodies associated with sustainable approaches to agricultural production systems, processing, and handling. Each year, Oregon Tilth inspectors evaluate every aspect of their land, production methods, and facilities, including the assessment of their organic seed sourcing, cover cropping practices, crop rotation, soil fertility programs, pest control programs, machinery maintenance, greenhouse practices, neighboring land uses, crop washing practices, crop segregation, plant use and destination, and water use, as well as administrative and documentation practices.

Upholding these standards, Gaia Farm cultivates more than 5 million individual plants (representing XX species) during each annual growing season. These crops include Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, Skullcap, Valerian, Gotu Kola, Holy Basil, Nettles, California Poppy, Dandelion leaf, Dandelion root, Burdock root, Ginkgo leaf, Hawthorn leaf, Hawthorn flower, and Elder flowers.

      About Gaia Herbs Professional

Since 1987, Gaia Herbs has established itself as the leading grower and producer of Certified Organic (COG) medicinal herbs and herbal products. Nestled in a pristine mountain valley in Western North Carolina, the Gaia Herb Farm is one of the largest and most productive commercial medicinal herb farms in the U.S. They cultivate over 50 crops on 250 acres that are certified organic by Oregon Tilth. As a vertically integrated company, they control every stage of production from organic soil enrichment programs, seed selection, cultivation, and harvesting, to research and analysis for correct harvest time. Their products are always validated to Full Spectrum Potency which ensures that the entirety of a plant's unique phytochemical makeup is intact. By extracting a plant's entire range of beneficial phytochemistries and concentrating them to a predetermined level, the resulting product retains therapeutic chemistry identical to the original plants, yet prepared to a guaranteed potency every time. They never purify or isolate any properties of the herb, but instead make medicine that mirrors nature. In 2001, they changed the face of herbal medicine with the introduction of Liquid Phyto-Caps, a patented delivery system for liquid extracts. This exclusive technology delivers a concentrated liquid extract in a vegetarian capsule. One Liquid Phyto-Cap equals as much as 75 drops of a Gaia Herbs Liquid Extract, which equals as much as 375 drops of other brands' tinctures. The net result is a much greater therapeutic value and strength at a lower price per milligram.

    Very rough
Well, health wise I’m assuming they do what they are supposed to do but calling them a ‘lozenge’ is a stretch. After the first one (directions say to let it dissolve, do not chew) my mouth got sore. Those things are ROUGH!!! I ended up dissolving them in boiling water (not an easy task) just to get them useable.
Needless to say, after a week or so I quit using. They need to be smoother and actually have the ability to dissolve.
