Today, Boiron still prides itself on its quality manufacturing as it has grown to be the world leader in homeopathy. The company feels a strong obligation to the environment. Even though homeopathic medicines require only a small amount of the source materials, Boiron makes every effort to reduce its impact on the environment. Most Boiron medicines containing plant species are wild harvested. Only a few of the plant species used are farm grown to avoid overharvesting. All plants used are harvested under the recommendations of the World Health Organization as well as Boiron’s strict guidelines. This helps ensure the sustainability of the plant species used in the medicines.

Other environmental initiatives focus on fair trade practices and responsible packaging. Boiron’s cardboard and plastic packaging, shipping containers, process chemicals and computer equipment are all recycled locally to reduce transportation costs and stimulate the local economy. Waste water generated during the manufacturing process is also pretreated on-site to avoid any potential negative effects on the environment.

While the majority of manufacturing takes place in France, the pharmaceutical-grade products meet high U.S. standards from the Food and Drug Administration, drug Good Manufacturing Practices and the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.

The harvest takes place each summer in the French Alps from select wild areas far from industrial and urban spaces. Boiron only harvests 30 percent of a picking site’s potential to help preserve the species. For more than 20 years, Boiron has partnered with professionals trained in botany and how to handle the delicate Arnica plant. Flexibility is built into this vital undertaking to adapt to weather changes that affect the harvest. Once the plants are picked, they are delivered in refrigerated trucks to Boiron’s laboratory within 48 hours. When the plants arrive at the lab, they undergo further quality control procedures to verify the species, the health of the plant and absence of contaminants.
